Video games and Controversy

Let me start this one of by saying sorry, i haven’t blogged for about a month now and therefor I wanted to come back with a bang! Or actually I’m not, I’m just going to link to a video that I found entertaining and interesting.

But before that: As some of you may (or may not) know, my favorite pass time is Video Games. It’s my hobby and has always been, I played videogames while growing up, and I play video games now… it’s just what I do.

And I love it, I feel great when I sit down in my room with the newest addition of a game series I like, it calming and it’s relaxing, but even though that I’s my hobby and favorite activity, I can see its flaws!

Video games are a relatively young medium compared to movies or books, who for over 100 years have delivered anything, form dramas, thrillers and even comedies. I love and respect both of these mediums as entertainment as well as art. But what I don’t respect is that these two mediums get the attention they deserve, but Video games don’t.

If you would hear about the Wii on some show like Oprah or alike it’s all about the “Good Games”, Wii Fit and all that stuff, games that the local house mom would find attractive, and that is completely okay. Nintendo is marketing their console primarily to anyone, so it would be expected that the little white Wii would land at a talk show and all that crap.

Oprah had a Wii on stage… She played Wii Sports… And she enjoyed it… Fair enough, I wouldn’t expect that they would be able to review games like No More Heroes or Metroid Prime 3 so it’s cool.

But as soon as the media found out that there was a 30 second sex scene in the Bioware game Mass effect they were completely outraged!

It’s a porn simulator, it offensive, it’s harsh, it’s wrong… everything that could be wrong was wrong… why is this, 30 seconds of bare ass… is you look at a movie like … -.-” (god I hate so say this) American Beauty, you have a completely but naked chick lying in a bathtub filled with roses, you got weapons, blood, drugs and every other thing that your mom don’t want you to know about… but that movie is considered as a masterful piece of art…

But a video game, that features a certain (and damn hard to find) way to get a tini tiny sexual content. I can’t stand that a media that I honor and call a part of me, is just toys for people who are planning on somehow destroying the world.

On that negative note, I’ll leave you with a few videos about this subject, please comment if you got questions, corrections or alike. Thank you, and have a good day.
